Giving God a Chance

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1.15

I was going to save this post until tomorrow. Unfortunately, it is related to the homily that my priest had presented in church tonight. In the Gospel that was shared in church the phrase “Repent and believe in the gospel” was said. The priest had decided to go on about how there are people who cheat, cut corners, and bully others. He asked us what would Jesus do in this situation. He reminded us that Jesus would turn the other cheek and stand up for what was right. By joining in the crowd and following in the crowd you are not doing the right thing. But by standing up to that bully and telling coworkers that they are in the wrong you are doing the right thing. You are not partaking in wrongful activity that is already in play. Instead you are doing the right thing by standing up for yourself.

It is not always easy to stand up for what is right in the world that we live in today. By repenting and believing in the gospel you are already giving God and his son Jesus Christ a chance. They call to us every day to follow in them, however, we do not always hear His call. As a girl who was raised Catholic, I did not always understand the importance of trusting in God. When I grew older I began to realize that God sent his son down to save the world from sin. Jesus was crucified and sacrificed himself for the sins of the world. God calls on us to see what Jesus had not done just for me but for the world around me. As Lent is rapidly coming up, I plan on doing some posts about Catholicism, God, Jesus, and the wonders they have done for me and the people around me.

#149 Rose DeWitt (Dawson)

Everyone pretty much knows the movie Titanic directed by James Cameron. The film is a love story about a upper class girl Rose and a lower class boy Jack as they meet on the ill fated voyage and fall in love. Rose is supposed to marry a wealthier man due to the fact that her family is broke, so they need the money. As you can probably guess by now Rose does not end up marrying the wealthy man. In the end she breaks from the family so she can lead a life of her own. There are pictures of her horse back riding and getting of an airplane at the end of her movie by her bed. I don’t want to reveal to much for those who have not seen the movie and do not know about the ending. However, in the scheme of things, Rose ends up living the life that she wants to lead, not the one that her family had laid out for her.

Tea for Thought

I was wondering about what to blog about today. I looked at the warm drink right next to me and thought that it would be a wonderful thing to write about. Tea is one of my favorite things to drink. Currently, I am drinking decaffeinated tea which is much better than the caffeinated one. I feel much better after drinking decaff tea than I do caffeinated tea.

Tea does have it’s healthy side affects. I remember being a child and my dad giving me tea to drink when I was sick. At the time I did not care for tea, however, as I grew older I began to realize that tea does taste good and that it helps me calm down for some reason. Recently, tea has been the one thing keeping me warm in the morning, since living in the northeast comes with cold winters.

I found a website that lists many of the healthy side effects that all different types of tea’s have. I preferably enjoy green tea. Green tea has been proven to help with the prevention of a certain cancers, such as breast, pancreatic, bladder and lung. It also has been shown to prevent clogging of the arteries and counteract oxidation stress on the brain. Black tea has been shown to prevent the lungs from damage caused by smoke. White tea has more anticancer cancer properties than other teas. Oolong and Pur-erh tea can help with cholesterol levels.

But also to be cautious of certain things that are in tea and not to drink to much of it. Unfortunately, for me and tea lovers every where, tea can have things in it that can not be beneficial to health. In particular, black tea is the tea is high in caffeine and can be dangerous to anyone’s health if they drink to much. When drinking tea there can be a reasonable high amount of herbs that can lead to health problems such as liver and kidney damage. Some tea can be high in willow bark and germander.

However, these side effects aside nutritionist have said to drink up and enjoy the health benefits that come with tea. “You want to incorporate healthy beverages in your diet on a more regular basis to benefit from these health-promoting properties,” says Diane L. McKay, PhD, a Tufts University scientist who studies antioxidants. “It’s not just about the foods; it’s about what you drink, as well, that can contribute to your health.” ( you would like to learn more about tea health benefits go to this website I tend to go to for questions about benefits of certain foods and beverages. I also would recommend talking to a doctor or health care provider about tea. So on that note drink up, but be aware of what is in your tea.

Eponine from Les Miserables

To me, Eponine is a good female role model. A young girl who fell in love with a man who does not love her back. However, she dedicates her life to protecting him. I never looked at Eponine as a good role model until I saw the 2012 version of Les Miserables. In the film there is a scene showing her getting into a mans attire to go out and fight in a battle at the barricade. Although, Eponine did this for love she willingly went into battle. She was a girl who was fighting in a army full of men. Remember back during the French Revolution a woman being a soldier was something that was unthinkable to many. Eponine has certain attributes that makes her a wonderful female role model because she was willing to learn certain things in order to make sure they were protected. I don’t intend on writing more on Eponine as I do not want to spoil what happens to her in the end.

Alice Cullen

I know that Twilight is a bit controversial in showing that there are good female role models. However, I feel that Alice Cullen is an amazing example for girls to look up to. Through out the series at parts Alice was able to take the lead when she needed to. For example, when the Cullens were in danger, Alice decided to go on a dangerous trek through the world to try and stop the Volturi from tearing her family apart. She chose to let them think she left them for good, when in reality she left to help them. Alice, to me, is a good female role model for her choice to play by her own rules when it comes down to assisting her family in times when hope seems lost.

The 151 Fictional Female Characters (I believe) Girls and Women should look up to!

One of the big problems I have today is that many people say that there are no good female characters for girls to look up to. I realized that this is a problem for women as well. There are fictional characters that women can look up too that are meant for women, not little girls. I hope within the next couple of months I am able to prove that there are good role models out there for both girls and women to help show that there is hope out there.

At this moment I do intend on doing one of real life women and girls in the future. I am not sure if I am going to do one for men and boys seeing as I am not one, but I do plan on looking into it. The only problem is that the men and boys list would be done from a female perspective and not a male one.

Although the list will not be posted everyday, hopefully, with in the next couple of months I will show that there are good female role models out there for both women and young girls.

The Importance of a Memory Box

Last night, I had dinner with my family at my grandparents. At the end of our pizza filled meal, my grandmother informed my parents that she had a gifts for my sister and I. After we cleaned up we headed into the living room. There she gave my sister and I two Ralph Lauren boxes. When we received them we were overjoyed thinking that there was something fancy in them from Ralph Lauren. However, when we opened them we found something better. Inside were mementos from when my sister and I were in high school. There were programs from graduation, tickets and playbills from shows that I had worked on, chorus concert programs, a Christmas ornament, and shows that we had seen together. Inside the box was a note from them letting us know that these things they will always hold close to their hearts and thanking us for the joy we had brought into their lives.

These two wonderful grandparents are not biologically related to us, but they have always loved me as a granddaughter. I count myself very luck to have this set of grandparents in my life because they had brought me joy as well. The used to have a boat and in the summer time they used to take my sister and I to Watch Hill and Block Island. My family spends every Christmas Eve at their house at a party. They watched my sister and I when my parents would take vacations and they would take us to the beach where we would spend time building sand castles. There are many memories that have been made from them. My Grandma Anita and Grandpa Russ are two wonderful grandparents who have accepted my family as their family. I look forward to many memories with them as I continue to grow.

The reason why a memory box is important to me because there are many memories from the past that I can carry on into the future. Going through this box there are many memories that come up. These memories I don’t just share with them, but other people as well. The fact that my  grandmother had kept these things makes me happy because I had thrown some of them out or they just got lost in a clutter of things. But, I have them now, and hopefully will hold on to these dear treasures for a long time.

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sits in a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama. October, 1967.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”-Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we remember a man who stood up for what he believed in. When Martin Luther King was sent to jail for protesting, he did not give up on his dream for people of all races and creed to live peacefully. In America today we still face racism and anti-religion. When Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what he believed in, he successfully created an army of anti-violence to fight against the violence the had caused segregation in the south. He was targeted by the KKK because they were trying to silence him, as well as, kill him because he was winning a war that they were losing. Instead, the KKK ended up showing their true colors to the world about who they are and how they get their way. In America today, things are better because of Martin Luther King Jr., and today we remember the man who famous said,”I have a dream.” The dream that Martin Luther King Jr. had is still alive and many people want to see it happen. However, there is still hate out there that prevents this from happening. But, we can create a world that Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of. I still dream of a day where people respect others based on who they are not what they are. The more we take the time to get to know others, the closer we are to creating a better world.

The Myrtle Wilson Syndrome

The Myrtle Wilson Syndrome

Jennifer Brush

Myrtle Wilson the woman who was doomed to die in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, her crime, she wanted to belong to a world that she did not belong. As the lover of the very wealthy Tom Buchanan she was able to gain access into the world where she craved to belong. However, the married woman who was married to a mechanic in squander would meet her end running towards a car who she believed to be driven by the man who she thought loved her. Myrtles death and wanting to belong to the world of the rich and the famous reflects on how fame obsessed America is.

The people who are rich and famous in this country don’t seem to have any privacy what so ever. Given The Great Gatsby was written before the digital age involving the internet and multiple tabloids. “I married him because I thought he was a gentleman,” she said finally. “I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit enough to lick my shoe.” “ But you were crazy about him for a while,” said Catherine. “Crazy about him!” cried Myrtle incredulously. “Who said I was crazy about him than I was about that man there.” (The Great Gatsby pg. 35) Myrtle is seen multiple times, as shown in this quote here, defending her right to have an affair away from her husband, George. She knows that he won’t be able to give her the life that she wanted. So, she began to look elsewhere for someone who would. Throughout the book it is shown that she has lied many times about Tom’s wife Daisy saying that she is Catholic and that Tom could not stand to be around his wife. In truth, Tom never really loved Myrtle or Daisy. Daisy he married because it was expected of him and Myrtle was one of many women who he looked for to fill the void that was missing.

This brings me to my next point, how people push themselves into the lives of the rich and famous. Myrtle was shoving herself into the spotlight amongst many friends of Tom’s because they all knew her as the mistress. Also, many people, including Daisy, knew who she was. It was as if she was an infamous celebrity amongst the circle of friends Tom had built around him. He would dangle her in front of Nick Carraway and hit on her in front of her own husband. He would help her sneak out of the broken down apartment she had lived in. Many people in the area at least had to have known something was going on between them. In my opinion this is why Myrtle was doomed from the beginning. “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” (The Great Gatsby pg. 180) The people who live in the lavish lifestyle that many crave get into forget that not everyone has the assets they need. Whenever a celebrity ends up getting in trouble with the law, they tend to get probation and nothing more. When scrolling through the comment section of these articles it appears as though everyone blames the judge for letting them off easy.

Back in 2009 a group of fame obsessed teenagers decided to go on a crime spree across southern California. They became known as “The Burglar Bunch” and “The Bling Ring”. These teens were known for breaking into houses of famous celebrities and stealing what they thought they deserved. After the teens had burgled the house of Paris Hilton several times, they decided to burgle the house of Audrina Patridge. Audrina, unlike Hilton had noticed right away that things had been taken from her house. This burglary is said to have been done by the ring leader Rachel Lee and her second in command Nick Prugo. When Patridge had discovered the burglaries she decided to post the security video on her website in hopes that someone will come forward with information. When I viewed this video I noticed Rebecca’s actions as strange compared to someone who would commit a robbery. She was playing with her hair and her face was uncovered. While watching this I began to wonder if it is because she wanted someone to see her. If she was this video was to be released everyone would see her face and know what she looked like.  It was as if she had foresight that thousands of people would see her.

Many more celebs would be hit. They hit Paris Hiltons house multiple times before she noticed that she had been burglarized. Rachel Bilson they hit numerous times as well. When they were at Paris Hiltons house they would treat the house as though it was there place to hang out. Paris was the first person who they decided to go after. The reason Rachel and Nick decided to go after Hilton is because they felt she was dumb and stupid because of the way that she acted in public. When they had gone to Hilton’s house they had discovered the spare key left under the door mat. Once they had the key they were free to walk around the house as they pleased. Paris was out of town in Las Vega when this robbery had occurred. The part that had intrigued me the most is how Rachel Lee had acted during and after the robberies according to Nick Prugo. “I’m in the house,” he said, “walking back and forth, freaking out. I mean, it’s weird to go through somebody’s things.” But Lee, he said, was always “very into it, focused”—so relaxed that when they burglarized the home of Rachel Bilson, on May 9, Lee took the time to go into the bathroom and have a bowel movement.” (The Suspects were Louboutins by Nancy Jo Sales) Although many people had wondered why these kids had done what they did. But to me the answer was obvious. These kids were focused on getting there foot in the door to fame. The driving force behind these burglaries for Rachel Lee was getting designer clothes from the rich and famous. A podium that she seemed too long to enjoy; she was obsessed with reality television which is why she chose to go after Audrina Patridge. The biggest fashion icon to her was Lindsay Lohan so they went to her house and burgled her. The only crime that the victims had committed this entire time was being in the headlines.

The reason these celebs were in the headlines were not always for something good. There have been several articles about Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton being arrested on drug charges. Then there was Audrina Patridge who at points acted like a complete air head in front of the cameras. As for Rachel Bilson she made headlines for being a teen idol from the hit television show The O.C. As for the other victims Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom, they were in the headlines for being a power couple, the same goes for Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox. After the robberies with what had happened Orlando Bloom revealed that he was traumatized by what had happened. Bloom also claimed his valuable watch collection wasn’t in a safe but was fairly well-hidden in a secret compartment inside a wall, obscured by a bookshelf, and testified that the thieves’ finding the box was “one of the things that was really freaky about the robbery, because I thought because they had found those that somebody who I knew personally must have broken into my house.” Bloom testified that he initially thought his housekeeper committed the robbery, and “so she sort of declined to work” there anymore, and he’s “since sent her flowers and stuff.” (The Bling Ring Cast Revealed: The Stars Grand Jury Testimony by Marlow Stern) Statements like these were said by many of the victims. But Orlando Bloom’s had stuck out to me the most. It was as thought his word had started to crumble beneath him when he discovered what had happened. His privacy had been violated; the feeling of being safe and secure in his own house was taken by a few teens who wanted things from his girlfriend. These people had felt unsafe because these teens did not view them as human beings rather as celebs.

In my opinion, in society today many people tend to forget that celebs are people as well. Many of them have jobs just like us. They have to get up in the morning get dressed and go to work. Whether that works is an audition, commercial, movie, music studio, or television show they still have to get up and do it. This is a topic that my grandmother and I come to every now and then. She states that times have changed for celebrities because they have no privacy like they used to. With the media now we have a twenty four hour celeb news line and many people take advantage of it. When I go to different websites such as and they have segments on clothing, make up, and hair. They have the typical who is breaking up and who is getting married, as well as babies and pets. Nothing really newsworthy compared to what is going on in the rest of world. It is as though these websites are there to give people something to talk about and people do talk about what they had read online. The bling ring robberies would go to prove this as one of them would become known best through reality television.

While the robberies being done by the bling ring were going on. One of their very own was rising amongst in Hollywood as a wannabe model. Alexis Neiers and her family had just scored a show on E! called Pretty Wild. The show was supposed to follow a mother and her three daughters as they tried to enter into the modeling business. During the first episode Andrea Arlington-Dunn, the mother, and two of her daughters Alexis Neiers and Tess Taylor were shown going to Biatta fashion for a model session. After the session they were offered contracts and they immediately signed on. However, towards the end of the episode a group of cops had shown up at the house to arrest Alexis for her involvement in the bling ring. After this her world seemed to crumble around her all taped on reality TV. Nancy Jo Sales who had covered the story had interviewed Neiers about what had happened. Neiers stated that she was innocent and not involved at all; even though she had been caught on camera at Orlando Blooms house. This interview was taped and shown on television as well as her reaction to the article. “Message One: “Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling.” She sounded choked up. “I’m calling to let you know how disappointed…f***!” Message Two: “Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling to let you know how disappointed I am in your story, how horrible you—. Then I could hear Andrea screaming: “You lied!” (The Bling Ring pg. 238) The video of her having a meltdown yelling into the phone of a magazine writer soon went viral. Many people have seen the video of the meltdown and her reaction to what had happened. Now a day’s Alexis Neiers seems to have done well for herself, getting married and becoming a mother, but she will still be remembered by man as being a part of the infamous bling ring.

The bling ring and Myrtle Wilson connect to me for a reason. Both of them wanted to be a part of the lavish life style they had seen before them. Rachel Lee the ring leader was able to manipulate and show off the stolen treasures, while Myrtle Wilson had wanted to be rid of the slums that she had come from. Both of them had met ends with being infamous in worlds around them. Myrtle became known as a mistress to Jay Gatsby, she was shown in the papers as being a loose woman with no morals at all. She and Gatsby became nothing more than tabloid side show for people to read about. The same happened with Rachel Lee, Nick Prugo, Alexis Neiers, and the rest of the bling ring. They eventually got sent to prison and served their time separately. Although many of them are out now and living their lives attempting to push the past behind them, the one thing they can’t escape is their past. When I read up on the bling ring now in articles, the only two names that show up are Alexis Neiers and Nick Prugo. Everyone else has moved on and started their life elsewhere, including Rachel Lee. However, because Neiers and Prugo had given the interview to Vanity Fair a few years ago, there moments of life in the criminal spotlight may never be gone. Eventually, time will go on and people will forget about these crimes and what these kids did. To some people the bling ring comes into mind because of the popular movie Sofia Coppola directed starring Harry Potter star Emma Watson. The name Myrtle Wilson rings a bell to some because of the popularity of Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby. Either way there are many people who are doing what they can to get noticed just like Myrtle Wilson and the bling ring.

Apple Cider Vinegar

One of the things that I have added to my diet lately is apple cider vinegar. Although the vinegar does not taste good. When I take a teaspoon and put in my mouth I get this tingling feeling all over my body. My face scrunches up, as my mind thinks “blech”. However, since I have added apple cider vinegar into my diet, I have noticed that I have felt healthier. Since starting this my sinuses have gone down and my stomach has felt better. Stomachaches are something that I have had trouble with since my teens. Whether it be from eating to much or nerves, I noticed that the vinegar has made it feel better.

I wanted to know why I was feeling much better after I began using apple cider vinegar. I found a website that gave fifteen reasons why. Although, I am not drinking this vinegar for all the reasons that are listed on the web page, many of the reasons are why I feel better in my daily routine. I have the web page posted below and I recommend you look at the page.

I know that drinking apple cider vinegar is not for everyone. I would suggest going to a doctor or health care provider before consuming. I even asked my doctor about what apple cider vinegar can do for me. She responded that there are many uses for apple cider vinegar can a natural alternative to certain things, like removing teeth stains and as a after shave. The website that I found has answered many of the things that my doctor has said. The fact that my doctor had said the same thing as this website made me realize how apple cider vinegar is a wonderful thing to be used.

Adding apple cider vinegar into my diet is one of the best things that I have done. It has helped me feel more happy and healthy on a daily basis. In the website below there is a list of uses that apple cider vinegar is used for. However, if you are thinking about adding it into your diet and have questions, I suggest you go to your doctor or health care provider and ask them. A website cannot answer everything. Enjoy and drink up!
