#141 Tauriel

... Look: Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel in ‘The Desolation of Smaug

In Peter Jackson’s adaption of J. R. R. Tolkiens The Hobbit, he adds in a female elf character that was not present in the book. This beautiful elf is Tauriel, she finds herself in love with a dwarf towards the end of the second movie and spends time fighting for him. This goes against what the elves believe in Rivendell. So, in a way it is kind of a Romeo and Juliet type love story. When she hears that the dwarves have left to go complete the mission that they are assigned, she bravely goes after them. In doing so she helps them complete what they had to do. I don’t want to spoil the ending for those who have not seen The Hobbit trilogy yet. Even though the series strays from the book, they are good movies to watch.

Superbowl Sunday Dip Recipe

Ah yes Superbowl Sunday is here! The one day a year when most Americans sit down and watch a football game for commercials and a half-time show. Junk food and Soda become a delicacy. This year they have Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz :). One of the family favorites is pepperoni pizza dip. This goes great with Fritos, carrots, and celery.

Here is the recipe and what you need

1 (8 oz.) cream cheese softened

1/2 cup sour cream

1 tsp. oregano

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper (this is optional, I usually don’t use the pepper)

1/2 cup spaghetti saue

1/2 cup chopped pepperoni

1/4 cup diced scallion

1/4 cup chopped green pepper (once again usually make this with out the pepper)

1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese

In a small bowl you beat together cream cheese and sour cream together. Once beaten together add in the oregano and garlic powder and beat again, here is when you add the red pepper if you like. Spread evenly in a nine or ten inch pie plate. Then spread the spaghetti sauce over the top. Sprinkle the pepperoni, green onion, and green pepper (optional). Bake in a 350 degrees oven for ten minutes. Once this is done top with the cheese and bake for five more minutes or until the cheese is melted. Makes 1 1/2 cups to twelve servings.

Other things to dip in pizza dip are broccoli florets, pepper strips, and crackers.

#142 Lavinia Andronicus

In William Shakespeare’s first tragedy Titus Andronicus the main character Titus has a beautiful daughter named Lavinia. Lavinia is chosen by Saturninus to marry him. However, Lavinia is in love with her boyfriend Bassianus, Saturninus’s brother. She pleads with her father for him not to have her marry him. Titus goes with what Lavinia feels in her heart. Saturninus in turn marries Tamora who is out for blood against Titus for killing her two eldest sons.

Unfortunately, for Lavinia this means that she is the one who Tamora will start acting her revenge on. One day in the woods Lavinia and Bassianus run into Tamora’s lover Aaron who is with two younger sons Demetrius and Chiron. There they kill Bassianus and brutally rape Lavinia. To add to Lavinia’s torture they cut out her tongue and cut off her hands so she cannot say who did this to her. Titus, however, figures this out and has his revenge on Tamora with her two sons. Lavinia grows from this rape as a strong female character. Although she is dead inside she makes sure that Demetrius and Chiron get punished for what they did to her, at least that is what I believes. After what happened to Lavinia she finds a way to carry on with her life no matter how depressed she is. She still wants justice for what happened to and the tragedies that happened after. I feel that I have given too much a way, so I won’t comment on more about what happens to Lavinia and the rest of the cast at the end.

St. Blaise Blessing of the Throats

St. Blaise The Patron of Throats and Illnesses

Tonight when I was in church there was some time added to the end. This is because it is midwinter and the priest administers the blessing of the throats in St. Blaise’s name. Although, the feast day of St. Blaise is not until February 3rd, it was acknowledged tonight. The way that the Blessing of the Throats is honored is by having two candles that are blessed being slightly opened and pressed against the throat.

There is a reason why the Blessing of the Throats is in St. Blaise’s name. Back in the eighth century St. Blaise was born into a prominent family who raised him to trust and believe in God. Once he had become a bishop a new persecution of Christians began. He then received a message from God to go into the hills to escape this persecution. So, when he went up there he found a cave that was surrounded by men hunting wild animals. Blaise was not afraid of healing them. Once they recognized that he was a bishop when they were healed they had captured him and took him back to the town for a trial. There he was sentenced to starve to death. However, when he was on the way back he spoke to a wolf about not taking a pig that belonged to a woman. In gratitude for his deed the woman sneaked food into the prison with candles. However, the governor eventually killed Blaise. There is also a story of when St. Blaise comes from a young boy who came to him with a fish bone stuck in his throat and his throat was healed.

Celebrating Halloween All Year Round

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday. Everything about it I love! From the ghost stories to horror movies to getting to dress up, it is just so fun. All of the activities that go with Halloween I participate in every year like a child. However, I do not go trick-or-treating anymore. Instead, I give out candy to all of the kids and watch Halloween movies. Unfortunately, with Halloween coming once a year on October 31st, I feel sad when it is over. So, like my Christmas movie tradition with watching a movie on the 25th of each month, I do the same with the last day of every month for Halloween. The reason why I do it the last day of each month is because some months don’t have thirty-one days in them. So tonight, I am spending some time watching a fun Halloween movie whether it be a scary one or a family fun one, they all make Halloween seem a little bit closer, even though Halloween is only nine months away.

P.S. Michael Myers is one of my favorite movie characters of all time.
