Samhain

Originally, Halloween was known as Samhain by the ancient Celts. Today, there are still people who celebrate Samhain on Halloween. To Wiccans, Pagans, and Druids Samhain is their most sacred holiday because it is a celebration of the dead. With the coldest part of the year upon them, they celebrate this evening with dances around a bonfire welcoming the spirits of the deceased into their circle. The spirits don’t have to come, but they are welcomed. Samhain for these people is the start of a new year for them. To all those who celebrate Samhain, I wish you a blessed and happy celebration.

Happy Halloween!

halloween The Moon is always happy on Halloween when the witches and ghosts are out...:

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday of all. The one day a year when you get to be somebody or something else. There is just something about Halloween that makes is so spectacular that I can’t place my finger on it. On the night that the Celts believed the dead would come back to Earth to either visit or wreak havoc. Halloween is one of those traditions that people can’t help but love. Happy Halloween!

Haunted Houses

In the last post about Michael Myers, I talked about how the unstoppable killing machine killed many people in the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois. His first kill was his sister who was in her bedroom. In John Carpenters masterpiece Halloween, we learn that many children believe the house to be haunted. Throughout the rest of the series we learn that the house where Michael Myers made his first kill in is abandoned or impossible to sell all because of what happened. The Myers house is said to be haunted.

halloween haunted house...trick or treating anyone?: Haunted houses go great with the tradition of Halloween that started in the 19th century in London. When Madame Tussaud created an exhibition of wax sculptures of famous people getting their heads cut off during the French Revolution many people in Britain were mortified. This was the year 1802, so many people had probably never seen something like this before. After this, a tradition started to grow around, horror exhibition showing up on Halloween. This tradition really picked up at the start of the 20th century with experimentation of the macabre theme. All over Europe scenes of death that would cause fright became more and more known.

During the Great Depression, haunted houses really did start to take off due to vandals. Many people were ruining the night of Halloween by causing fires and breaking windows. So, people started making scary decorations at their houses as a way to distract these vandals. Groups of families would have house to house parties with their basements being decorated. Haunted houses started off as being a macabre display to a phenomenon in October with the theme of Halloween. In all small towns, there is a house that is thought to be haunted, thus playing on the fear of a haunted house.

MM/SKM: Michael Myers

1. Michael Myers Halloween set the precedence for modern-day horror films, and Michael Myers helped provide the prototype for villains to come. The first Boogeyman character, Myers is a wonderful classic in the horror genre.: My favorite movie serial killer is Michael Myers. The man who killed his sixteen year old sister when he was just six years old happens to break out of an asylum on Halloween night. Acquiring a blank white mask and a black jumpsuit leads everything up to the imagination about what he looks like. Even though we got a glimpse of what he looked like in the original 1978 Halloween by John Carpenter, through out the rest of the series we only see a small glimpse of him. The weapon of choice he uses is a kitchen knife. A simple, yet dangerous weapon, we all have in our house. Other than that we see him use his hands to kill all the others who break the taboo’s of horror movies. One of the great ways that makes Michael Myers scary is his ability to sneak up on people. This is a man who has a regular shape, not like Jason and Frankenstein with bulky bodies. This is a man who’s face is not recognized like Freddy and Dracula. He literally, can walk into a store kill all the staff and the one survivor wouldn’t be able to tell you what he looked liked because he is able to conceal his face. The usage of the mask and the way that Michael Myers hides his face is what makes him one of the most scariest of all.

Halloween (1978) One day someone will write a essay like "The washing on the line - hideout for movie monsters from Michael Meyers to It".: Many questions that were asked through out the first one is why did he decide to chase after one girl in particular to kill. Later in the sequel, we learn that this girl, who is well known baby sitter, is his sister. Once again,Michael Myers sets his eyes on killing another family member. Through out the rest of the original Halloween series we watch as Michael Myers focuses on killing his niece, a nephew, and a great nephew. We learn in one movie that this is because of his association with the a cult known as the cult of the Thorn. Once all of his family members are killed he becomes immortal or something like that. Later on, we learn that he enjoys killing for fun. Michael Myers is, as Doctor Loomis said, evil on two legs. Doctor Loomis, the man who tried to help him out of the darkness at the asylum but couldn’t. The psychiatrist who knew Michael well enough to know that he was heading to his hometown in Haddonfield, Illinois, a small, not real town in the mid west. Of all the places for these murders to happen. A small quiet town where nothing bad really happens, yet Michael Myers changed all of that on Halloween night.

The Night He Came Home: Michael Myers is unstoppable in all of the films that he is portrayed in. He is shown to have super human strength with the inability to die. People shoot at him, set off a bomb, hang him, stab him, and push him off a building, yet he still survives. Even though, this is a fake character, pretty much all of the former horror movie characters have died and come back in some way. Michael doesn’t talk and has no conscious about what he does. He has a one track mind, in order to get to his ultimate goal. The only thing that people can think of about why he kills some of the people is because he enjoys its. Michael Myers is the ultimate, unstoppable killing machine with nothing but rage to kill. Michael Myers is one killer who we do not feel sympathy for because he had a choice. All of the other characters had something bad happen to them in their lives that drove them to kill. Michael Myers chose, even though he was corrupted at a young age, to kill all of those who, at one point, loved him. Michael Myers could have chosen to escape once he saw what he had done to his sister, but he did not. Michael Myers is truly evil for the fact that he decided to kill, instead of say no and escape. John Carpenter brought the man who changed the face of Halloween forever in 1978’s Halloween.

Orange and Black

No ordinary wreath! Black boa & glass balls.....more beautiful than whimsical....Halloween Wreath by FestiveTouch on Etsy: The two most colors that are most associated with Halloween are orange and black. These colors became associated with Halloween starting with the ancient Celts holiday Samhain. The time of the year when the amount of daylight was changing, this is why there is the color black. When we look at orange we are reminded of the harvest. The colors of Halloween date back to the Celts because they were people who lived off the land. So, their lives revolved around what the earth had to offer at different times. Orange and black are two colors of Halloween that have yet to go out of style due to their origins.

The Cat is playing the Violin, while several mice dance around him! So cute! A fun Card for your Halloween Craft Projects! | The Graphics Fairy: Where would a witch be without her black cat? Well, if you were to ask the ancient Celts, the would tell you that it is a soul that has been reincarnated. Moving onto when Christianity began to spread across Europe, it was believed that a black cat was a witches familiar. The being in which the soul of the witch had taken form. This is why there are so many photos of witches with black cats, their soul is right there with them. Black cats are a part of Halloween with the ancient folklore and legends that came from long ago.

Witches!

Witch Rides Broom & Two Pumpkins | Halloween Postcard, circa 1910.Lets admit it, one of the most common Halloween costumes out there is a witch. The pointy hat with a dress accompanied by a broom or a wart or two. Witches have been long associated with Halloween with power. It was in legend that on Halloween night a witches power would be the most powerful. With spells and potions they would come up with ways to make their Halloween night a night of vengeance. Witch, the word originating from Wicca, were feared by the Christian church because of this. Witch hunts had taken place with many innocent people being burned alive. Most famously in the United States, the Salem Witch Trials took place in the late 1600’s. It was thought that a witch was evil because she had sold her soul to the devil. Which is why: burning, dunking, hanging, or worse was considered the best way to get rid of her. Witches were feared for the fear of the powers that they came with once their soul was gone, taken by the devil. Whether they were flying through the air on a broomstick by the full moon or dancing around a cauldron, witches are still known as one of the central figures of Halloween based on fear and legend.

MM.SKM: The Sanderson Sisters

Hocus Pocus - the infamous Sanderson Sisters: The month of October would not be the same without viewing the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus. A comedy about three witches who are brought back from the dead due to a curse the eldest one cast. Winnie, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson are the comedic trio of sister witches in this story. From their first encounter with a sprinkling system to “discovering” day light savings time. The Sandersons are from the year 1693 and are brought back when a cynical teenage boy lit the black flamed candle. Throughout this film we watch as the Sandersons take on modern day Halloween compared to what it was like three hundred years ago with all the cliches. From a talking black cat to flying on broomsticks, the Sanderson sisters do what they can to suck the life out of all the children of Salem, Massachusetts. So, even though their adventure in the year 1993 is rather hilarious, they are shown to be evil. The Sandersons are comically evil with their ways of getting through a modern day Halloween with their eyes set on one thing, eternal life.

Bats, Skeletons, and Spiders

a collection of odd ideas I found Halloween and or wedding related that were neat to pull ideas from :): Bats, skeletons, and spiders are among the most common Halloween decorations. All three of these items all have origins with the start of Halloween. Originally known as Samhain to the ancient Celts in Ireland, many of them made their appearance with traditions that they started.

  • I love old school halloween. Takes me back to when it was all still pretty magical.: Skeletons: The Druids and Celts believed that the skull was the “psychic seat” for the human soul. The rest of the skeleton is associated because it represents the end of a physical life. This is connected with the belief that the dead spirits come back to Earth on Halloween night.
  • Bats: These nocturnal creatures became associated with Samhain with bonfires. The ancient Celts would have bonfires to honor the dead. In doing so, the bonfires would draw in mosquitoes leading bats to come and eat them. Vampires are also said to turn into bats, and as we know vampires are heavily associated with Halloween.
  • Spiders: They represent the cycle of life through the web they weave. Creepy eight legged arachnids, spiders represent life and death when a bug flies into its trap. Not to mention, spiders like the dark, so a abandoned house is where they would be easy to find.

spider haunt tunnel: Bats, skeletons, and spiders all have their origins with some form of folklore. They are well known around the time of Halloween with decor and costumes popping up every where. But, what would Halloween be without them?

Trick Or Treat

FREE trick-or-tree halloween party banner for download on pizzazzerie!: Who here went trick or treating as a child? I know I did and I enjoyed getting all the candy afterwards. Of course, my parents did check all of the candy to make sure that it was safe to eat once we got home from a cold night. However, trick or treating is one of the traditions of Halloween that dates back to the Middle Ages. Getting dressed up and going door to door for treats originated in Ireland where people would dress up wearing animal skins on Samhain. Villagers would disguise themselves, like they would with the mask, to make the spirits think they were one of them. When the would dress up they would have bonfires to honor the deceased.

Instead of having people pray to the dead, instead they would go from house to house performing skits and receiving a treat in return. The poor people would visit the houses of the rich and receive pastries. Trick or treating started out as a way of Christianity turning down the the traditions of Samhain, which many of them considered evil. Many Christians today still do not celebrate Halloween given the origins. But, who would have thought that many of the traditions of Halloween would have started with Christians, who even today, considered Halloween the Devils night?
