For some reason The Hunchback of Notre Dame has become a horror classic in several movies. There is nothing that is really scary about this story in particular. But, when we are introduced to Quasimodo in the silent 1923’s movie we see a different side. When we are first introduced to him we feel bad for the man who is born with disfigurement, half blind, half deaf, and mute. He is tortured and verbally abused by his cruel master Jehan. As the movie goes on we watch as Quasimodo is pushed further into violence. Seeing as Quasimodo is living in a time when there were no laws to protect those with disabilities he is shown to not know right from wrong. Quasimodo is merely a disfigured and disabled man who does not know is own strength. He doesn’t know what it means to be kind to people because he was locked away and never treated right. But, we watch in shock as Quasimodo is pushed further to kill those around him. To me, Quasimodo is no monster, just the result of cruel humans.
