The Godfather

On April 7, 1939 a movie legend was born. Francis Ford Coppola has directed many films that are inspirational leading him to become a legend. The Godfather is a favorite of mine that he had directed. Starring Marlon Brando as a mob boss and Al Pacino as his son, we are brought into the world of the Italian mafia based on the Mario Puzo book by the same name.

Michael Corleone and his girlfriend Kay Adams attend the wedding of Michael’s sister. When Kay notices a line of people going into a building, Michael explains to her that his father is the head of the “family business”. After explaining that a man can not refuse an offer on his daughters wedding day, Michael explains more about the exploits and crimes that his father has committed and helped cover up by using the mob. Michael reveals to Kay that he does not want to be involved in this business of any type. All that goes well until Vito, Michael’s father, escapes an assassination attempt. With Vito in the hospital, Michael finds that he is being drawn right back into the family business. When Michael kills two men as revenge for his father’s near death, he finds himself exiled to Italy. Leaving everything behind he ends up marrying a young girl who winds up murdered because of Michael’s activities. When Michael returns to the United States he finds Kay and asks her to marry him. While all of this is going on, it is revealed that Michael’s sister is in an abusive relationship with her husband. This leads to Michael’s hot headed brother Sonny to end up being killed. Vito who is out of the hospital ends up assuming the role as head of the Corleone family, which is whey Michael was able to return to the United States in the first place. Meanwhile, many of the loyal subordinates under Vito end up being killed. After Michael marries Kay, many more murders happen to those who have double crossed his family. When Vito dies, Michael assumes the head of the Corleone crime family as Kay watches in horror.

The Godfather is one of the most iconic films of all time. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this movie has been parodied over and over again. The Godfather, to me, is Francis Ford Coppola’s best film to date.
