Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke 1997 (Dir. Hayao Miyazaki. With voices of Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver): Claire Danes is quite the actress! On April 12 she turns another year older only to add more well known roles to her career. One of my favorite movies that she starred in she lent her voice to. In Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke she portrays the female character San in the English dub version of this brilliant film.

Set in the Muromachi period in Japan, a town is attacked by a demon. In the village they learn that the demon was a corrupt boar god by the name of Nago. We are introduced to Ashitaka who meets a wandering monk along his journey  who inform him about the great forest spirits that change from night to day. From there his travels bring him to meet San who is riding upon a wolf. San is not very fond of humans and has lived in the forest her whole life. With San and her wolf pack, Ashitaka finds that he is not as welcomed with her as he thought. San and Ashitaka go to a village known as Irontown. While in the town San tries to kill Eboshi, a woman Irontown who has a lot of power. However, Ashitaka intervenes and the two are knocked unconscious. Through all of this Ashitaka and San find themselves falling in love with each other. After leaving Irontown, Ashitaka and San find themselves heading to battle against a clan of boars. These boars are corrupt gods who are trying to destroy everything in its midst. Ashitaka and San find themselves making decisions that could lead sacrifice. Will Ashitaka and San be able to make it out together?

Princess Mononoke is one of those films that I truly enjoy. On April 12, 1979, Claire Danes was born. She lent her voice to this film in the English dub version of Princess Mononoke. One of the many masterpieces by Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke is one film that is to enchant.
