Everyone knows the story of the Titanic. It was the unsinkable ship that sunk in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg. Today, there are movies, parodies, books, and music based upon the tragedy. On April 15, 1912 at 2:20 AM the Titanic sunk on its maiden version. In 1997, James Cameron’s movie Titanic hit theaters becoming a hit with audiences.
The movie opens with a group of divers taking out a safe from the Titanic. The head of the expedition is a treasure hunter who is looking for a treasured necklace called “The Heart of the Ocean.” Inside the safe they do not find the necklace, rather they found drawings. One of the drawings is of Rose Dawson who sees the news report about the pictures. Upon hearing this, Rose and her granddaughter are invited to the expedition in hopes of finding more information about the necklace. Rose starts to tell the story of her life aboard the ship during it’s final moments. She reveals that her original last name was De Witt. With her family broke, she is being forced into a loveless marriage with a man named Cal. One night Rose decides to attempt suicide to get out of her life only for Jack to save her. Jack, unlike Rose, is a poor man who stops her from jumping. The next night Jack is invited to dine with Rose’s family as a thank you for saving her life. After dinner Jack takes Rose to his quarters the third class, lowest class, section. Rose has a great time with Jack and the two reunite the next day. However, Rose’s mother is disapproving of Jack and her fiancee realizes Jack and Rose have feelings for each other. Rose and Jack make a mad dash with each other the final day Titanic was above water. Rose asks Jack, who is a penniless artist, to draw a picture of her wearing only the Heart of the Ocean necklace, which is an engagement gift from Cal. That night, the two see the boat as it hits the iceberg. Believing everything will be okay, Rose and Jack return to Rose’s quarters. However, Cal has other plans and frames Jack for stealing a the “Heart of the Ocean”. Jack is taken into custody being handcuffed down below. Rose realizing the danger heads down to get Jack out of his situation. The two find themselves struggling with the rest of the third class passengers who are locked below as well. Finally, getting out of down below to the high deck as the boat sinks they run into Cal again. It is revealed that Rose has a seat on a lifeboat. However, she jumps off the boat and runs to Jack. An angry Cal follows Jack and shoots at him and Rose. Cal starts to laugh as the two run off revealing that the jacket Rose is wearing has the “Heart of the Ocean” in one of the pockets. Rose and Jack manage to make it back to the top of the deck just as the boat starts to go down for good. Rose and Jack find a door with Rose staying upon it. Jack tells Rose that she is going to live a long life as she realizes they are dying. Rose sees a boat, that Molly Brown made turn around, and she tries to wake Jack. She realizes he is dead promising that she won’t let go. Rose swims to a dead sailor who has a whistle and blows it until the boat comes back. Aboard the Carpathia with other survivors, Rose hides herself from Cal and changes her name to Dawson, which is Jack’s last name. Upon arriving in New York City, Rose realizes that she has the “Heart of the Ocean” in her pocket. The movie flashes forward to Rose telling the rest of the crew about the amount of people who died. One of the crew member’s informed her that there is no record of Jack Dawson being upon the ship. She tells them that there would be no reason for their to be a record of him because of his class level. She does not tell them about her having the “Heart of the Ocean” with her. Leading them to believe that the necklace is gone for good, Rose drops the necklace in the ocean. The movie ends with Rose sleeping in her bed. Pictures are shown of her life of freedom away from the life that her mother had set up for her. In her dream, Rose is aboard the Titanic where she is reunited with Jack and all the others who perished aboard the ship. She kisses him on the grand staircase with the clock at 2:20 AM, the exact time the Titanic sank, to cheers.
