Kirsten Dunst is one of the most well known actresses of today. Her acting style has become one that many have grown to love. In the 1999 film The Virgin Suicides, she stars as a young girl who has reached sexual maturity. However, under her domineering parents she is unable to have the freedom she deserves.
The movie is narrated by a neighborhood boy who knew the Lisbon girls. Lux, Therese, Mary, Bonnie, and Cecelia are the five beautiful daughters of overbearing Catholic parents in the 1970’s. The girls father teaches math at the Catholic high school the girls attend, while their mother is a homemaker. The Lisbon family is shaken when the youngest daughter Cecelia attempts suicide. After believing her to be better, Cecelia achieves committing suicide by jumping out the window at a party her parents hosted for her. From her death, the neighborhood boy and his friends become fascinated with the remaining Lisbon sisters.
When Lux starts to attract the attention of the school heart throb, Trip Fontaine, she starts a romance with him. Trip convinces the Lisbons parents to let the girls go to the homecoming dance. Each girl gets a date, yet the end up wearing outdated dresses their mother made for them. Lux breaks a rule by staying out all night with Trip only to find herself alone on the football field. When Lux returns home, not only her, but her sisters are punished severely. The girls are pulled out of school with their parents throwing away music albums and anything they consider to be a bad influence. With the Lisbon sisters being trapped inside their parents house, they leave a note for the neighborhood boys and let them inside. Sadly, upon hearing a noise they wander into the basement only to find that Bonnie killed herself. Horrified, they rush upstairs to find Mary dead in the oven, Therese having overdosed on sleeping pills, and Lux locking herself in the garage and leaving the car running with carbon monoxide killing her. When the Lisbon parents return home they throw away everything that belonged to their daughters. In grief they sell their house and leave town. The boys gather all they can of the Lisbon sisters spending the rest of their lives wondering about the girls and who they could have been.
