Liam Neeson rose to prominence in the 1993 film Schindler’s List. In this movie he stars as Oskar Schindler, a man who is credited with saving more than a thousand Jewish people during the Holocaust. In this movie, he brings a sobering reminder as to the horrors of the concentration camps and the bravery of one man.
Oskar Schindler is a jovially married man who is a member of the Nazi Party. When he receives the chance to own a factory he is delighted. However, the German’s have taken Poland and the Jewish people, as well as other minorities, are being rounded up. When Schindler meets his new assistant Istak Stern, who is Jewish, he starts to become open to what is happening around him. After the local ghetto is evacuated and witnessing the Nazis murder innocent people Schindler starts to have a change of heart. It is not until Stern starts to bring him people, like a rabbi and a child, does Schindler start to realize that he could save these people. However, in the background is Amon Goth, a commandant at the local concentration camp, that he must be careful around. He knows that if he does get caught treating his workers humanely, he could lose his life. With tragedy around him, Schindler starts to sell what he has in order to bring more into the factory. He starts to make up excuses as to why children should be allowed to work in his factory. Eventually, it is announced that Germany will surrender making Schindler and his wife war criminals. As Schindler and his wife prepare to leave, he is approached by Stern with a ring and a note telling the Allies that he is a good man. However, Schindler realizes that he could have saved more if he had sold a few more things breaks down in tears as the Jewish people surround and remind him that what he did was great. The movie closes with revealing that Goth was executed and Schindler failed at his marriage and died broke. But, it is revealed that Oskar Schindler was named Righteous Among Nations by Yad Vashem with a tree that he planted in Israel that grows there today. The movie ends with the survivors of the Holocaust who worked in Schindlers factor placing stones on his grave in Israel.
Schindler’s List is a sobering reminder to the horrors of the Holocaust. In this film, Liam Neeson brings to life a compassionate Oskar Schindler who does his best to save those around him. On June 7, Liam Neeson was born with many wonderful portrayals on screen. But none, like in the 1993 film Schindler’s List.
