August 9th has been designated by the United Nations as International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. There are many people who are native to their lands that are proud of their heritage. In 1998 the movie Smoke Signals brings together an unlikely friendship of a Native American and a European.
Victor and Thomas Builds The Fire are brought together by unlikely circumstances. Although, disliking each other at first they are able to connect when Victor’s father passes away. The two embark on a trip to collect his ashes where they are able to explore their identities. Not losing sight of Thomas’s identity, they find that they have very different personalities. When the two finally arrive in Phoenix, Arizona to collect the ashes, Victor reveals that his father had been abusive and a drunk. It is later revealed that his father set off a fire that killed Thomas’s parents. On the way back home the two are able to reflect on their relationship growing closer together.
In 1998 the film Smoke Signals premiered to critical acclaim. This movie was able to bring together a story about remembering who you are while giving an insider to Native American culture. August 9th has been designated by the United Nations as International Day of the World’s Indigenous People honoring people of all countries who are Native to their land.
