Psycho

Smaller images of Anthony Perkins and John Gavin are above the words, written in large print, "Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho".On September 8, 1960 the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho premiered. People became attracted to this movie when the announced that there would be no one allowed in the theater once the movie started. Not wanting any secrets revealed many people left the theater in shock, yet honoring Hitchcock’s request.

When the movie opens we meet Marion Crane and her boyfriend Sam Loomis. With Sam low on money, Marion steals some from her employers client. Quickly she leaves town knowing that she has committed a crime. On her travels she meets a policeman who scares her into buying a new car. Knowing that she could be caught and jailed for her deed, she decides to make things right and head back. But, on her way she stops at Bates Motel. She meets Norman after seeing a profile of his mother in the window. Norman gives her a room and she eats dinner with him. However, she learns that his mother is very over protective of him, even calling Marion a whore. Later that night Marion is murdered by the mother in the shower. Norman discovers the crime, cleans up after his mothers mess, and disposes of any trace of Marion being there.

Meanwhile, we learn that Marion’s sister is looking for her as well as police for the amount of money she has stolen. When Sam is approached by Lila and the police, the two start their own investigation. Soon they hire a private investigator who ends up being murdered when he encounters the Bates Motel and Mrs. Bates. When they don’t hear back from him Lila and Sam head up their own investigation. Along the way they learn that Mrs. Bates has been dead for many years leaving them with confusion. When the two get to the motel, they find Norman who puts them in a different room. Posing as a couple, Sam tries to get Norman to confess while Lila enters the home of the Bates. When Norman catches on he knocks out Sam and runs into his home. There Lila learns the truth about Norman Bates and his mother. Many of you know what happens, but I will not reveal what happens next.

Psycho is one of those films that has stood the test of time entertaining, scaring, and inspiring people. On September 8, 1960 Psycho premiered astound audiences everywhere. Nothing quite matches up to Alfred Hitchcock’s genius in this film making.

East of Eden

Elia Kazan is one of the most influential directors of all time. Throughout his career he was able to bring to life films that inspired us all. Even though his name is unknown to many, his work still lives on as many enjoy them today. In the 1955 film East of Eden based on the John Steinbeck novel.

Following the story of Aron and Cal Trask we are introduced to the lives those around them as America is about to head into World War I. The movie begins with the year 1917 with the two discovering that their mother is still alive running a brothel. The two brothers are sons of a draftsman who has an ambitious plan to go into the vegetable hauling business. Cal decides to go with him after he is heartbroken by learning of his mothers whereabouts. In the meantime, Aron falls in love with a girl named Abra who loves him back. One night when Cal returns from work, he meets up with Abra. The two end up kissing with Aron watching. Abra breaks into tears and decides to stay with Aron. When Cal’s business goes well he decides to give some of his money to his father. While throwing a party in honor of Cal, a jealous Aron announces that he and Abra are engaged. However, things get worse when Aron orders Cal to stay away from Abra. Frustrated with the way that Aron is acting, Cal takes Aron to see their mother. Sadly, things take a turn for the worse when their father has a stroke. With Aron having joined the army, Cal is left alone to care for his father. While visiting him he is visited by Abra who gives him a kiss. In the end, Abra leaves Cal to care for his father.

Elia Kazan brought to life John Steinbeck’s East of Eden in 1955. On September 7, 1909 Elia Kazon was born, making today his 107 birthday. Although he is not hear to celebrate it, many still honor him today with his work.
