Notorious

On September 20, 1946 the Cannes Film Festival premiered for the first time in seven years. After World War II it was a relief to have this legendary film festival premiere once again. In this film festival Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious premiered here. Although, Notorious did not win any awards, it won (and scared) the hearts of everyone who observed this legendary film.

When Alicia Huberman’s father is convicted of being a Nazi spy she finds a chance at redemption. Upon meeting agent T.R. Devlin she takes on the case to spy on another American assisting the Nazis. Learning that this man is an ex-lover of hers, Devlin encourages her to seduce Alex Sebastian. However, Alicia and Devlin have fallen in love complicating matters when she is forced to marry Alex. Knowing that she doesn’t really love him, Alicia knows that what she is doing is right for her country. She is able to go undetected until one night at a part Devlin goes into the wine cellar with Alicia where he accidentally breaks a wine bottle. Devlin learns that the wine bottle is filled with black sand. Taking some samples, Devlin does not completely clean up the mess he made. With doubts of Alicia haunting him from his mothers insistence, he puts together the pieces revealing to her that she is an American spy. Alex and his mother work together to kill Alicia. They start poisoning her to make her look as though she is sick leading to her eventual death. However, Alicia is able to reveal what is happening to her to Devlin. Upon learning of the dire state that Alicia is in, Devlin manages to take her to the hospital while revealing to Alex and his mother that they are going to jail for treason.

Notorious was one of the films featured at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. On September 20, 1946, the first time in seven years, the Cannes Film Festival opened. This legendary film festival still continues on today with many films being submitted for the top prize.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). Very exciting Harry Potter movie. Everything gets a lot more serious in this one, and the actors really step up their game as a result. I've seen this one so many times! Rewatched DVD 09/28/14: This is a first for me as I am doing a movie based on the birthday of a fictional character. Growing up I found myself looking up to Hermione Granger as an role model. The smart and witty girl did not let any one stand in her way from accomplishing her goals. As J.K. Rowling has stated her birthday falls on September 19, 1979. In honor of her birthday, I have decided to do Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

After a whirlwind summer, of encountering Death Eaters and witnessing the Quidditch World Cup, Harry Potter finds himself in trouble again. The fourteen year old wizard discovers that someone placed his name in the Goblet of Fire for the Triwizard Tournament. Knowing that he did not do this, he tries to forego the nomination, but he is unable to. After being daunted by many classmates except for his friend Hermione Granger, he struggles as he prepares for the first task. After the first task is over he regains the friendship of Ron Weasley and others who had their doubts. However, Harry has other things to worry about as he knows that the person who placed his name in the goblet wants him to die. After a school dance and another task completed Harry knows that the truth will reveal itself. However, in the final task he finds himself, alongside Cedric Diggory the other Hogwarts champion, being transported to a graveyard. There Cedric is murdered with bringing Lord Voldemort back to life. After a brief battle, Harry is able to return with Cedric’s body to Hogwarts where he reveals that Voldemort is back. With the school year coming to a close with a school in grieving, Harry finds comfort in Ron and Hermione knowing that they will always be there for him.

Hermione Granger made Harry’s life easier in the fourth movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by doing, pretty much, all the research he needed for the tasks. Always loyal to the man who has been like a brother to her, Hermione Granger tends to shine in all of the movies that she has been portrayed in. On September 19, 1979, Hermione Granger was born as making an impact on many people around the world.

Our Town (1940)

On September 18, 1679, New Hampshire became a colony part of Massachusetts. As history shows this would not last as New Hampshire is now their own state. So, in honor of this New Hampshire day, I have decided to do the 1940 film Our Town. Based upon the play by Thorton Wilder we are brought into a small town in New Hampshire where everyone is friendly.

The narrator of the film introduces us to two children George Gibbs and Emily Webb. The two are growing up with their respective families in Grovers Corners, New Hampshire in 1901. As the two become friends they find themselves growing closer in the future years. Fast forwarding to a couple years in the future the two are married and starting their lives together. However, tragedy strikes when Emily struggles in childbirth. Finding herself in heaven, Emily is comforted by the ghosts of those who had passed in the recent years. She wants to go back to earth and relive a memory. She does so against the wishes of those around her. Upon watching this she is ableto see that they are unable to see one another or talk to each other taking in every precious moment of life they have around them. Unlike in the play, Emily decides to head back to earth where she is reunited with George and her newborn child.

New Hampshire wouldn’t be the place it is today if it was not part of the Massachusetts colony. On September 18, 1679, this happened paving the way for the future of the state. In the 1940 movie Our Town we are introduced to a fictional town in New Hampshire where everyone is happy, but missing out on the small parts of life.

Legally Blonde

On September 17, 1630 Boston Massachusetts was founded. This iconic American city has grown into becoming a metropolitan where people from all walks of life come to learn, live, and tour. Several movies have been filmed and take place in the City of Boston and the metropolitan area. One of those movies happens to be the 2001 comedy Legally Blonde.

When sorority UCLA student Elle Woods gets dumped by her boyfriend Warner she is crushed. On the night she was planning on becoming engaged causes her to head off on a tirade to win him back. So, when she learns that he is heading to Harvard Law School, she hits the books, manages to get the LSAT score, and packs her bags. When she gets there she finds that everyone around her looks down upon her because of her fashion sense and airhead ways. Things get worse when after her first class she finds out that Warner is engaged to Vivian. Learning that Vivian is doing what she can to sabotage Elle’s existence at Harvard she goes the extra mile to prove her wrong. All of those around her learn that Elle is smarter and caring than she came off as. One day she receives a notice from one of her professors that he wants her on a high profiled case he is working on. When she learns that she is one of the students chosen she is ecstatic. When she learns that the client is one of her favorite exercise guru’s she is more psyched. Using her common sense and wits, Elle is able to gain the clients trust and take down some of the witnesses in court. However, when the professor hits on her she is discouraged. Deciding to head back to Los Angeles, she starts to say her good-byes when she runs into the same professor she had on her first day of classes. Encouraged by her and her nail salon friends, she heads back to court as a law student where she is able to win the case and two hearts. One of those hearts is of Warners, the other is Emmett Richmond who has been there for her from the beginning. The movie closes with the graduation of the law students at Harvard with Elle being elected class speaker. We learn that Elle is on her way to becoming a successful lawyer with a married life ahead of her.

Boston, Massachusetts is a beautiful city with many sites to see. However, there are many films that take place inside this city. Legally Blonde is one of those films that is able to make people laugh and cry in the end. On September 17, 1630, Boston, Massachusetts was founded with the history just beginning.

How to Marry a Millionaire

Howtomarry1.jpgLauren Bacall was a legendary actress. Throughout her life she spent most time in the spotlight making movies portraying various characters. On September 16, 1924 she was brought into the world allowing a light into the universe. I have seen many of her films, How to Marry a Millionaire has to be a favorite of mine.

Three women: Pola, Loco, and Schatze rent a penthouse in New York City. The three women plan to use the apartment as a way to gain a marriage to a rich man. However, their plan starts to go awry when all three of them find themselves attracted to men who are not rich. But, they do catch the eye of three men who are rich, but are not the right fit. Loco finds a married man who is well off, but knows that breaking up a marriage would be wrong. Pola finds herself being fancied by a phony oil tycoon. In the meantime, Schatze ends up finding herself stuck between a rich man and a poor man. Eventually, the three women decide to stay with the men who they really love. Yes, they choose the three poor men, not the rich ones. Only to find out in the end that the men who they married are actually millionaires.

Lauren Bacall was able to break out of a traditional acting shell that I have not seen from her before. In How to Marry a Millionaire she is able to bring out a comedic side that is not seen in any of her other films. On September 16, 1924 Lauren Bacall was born with a life of love and entertainment ahead of her.

The Jungle Book

Bruce Reitherman brought many animated children characters to life. In 1967, he brought to life the character of Mowgli in Disney’s The Jungle Book. His voice characterization of Mowgli is like no other.

Mowgli is an orphaned boy who has been raised by a wolf pack. However, he learns that he has to leave when the man hating tiger Shere-Khan appears. Promising to hunt him down and kill anyone who is in his way, Mowgli and the panther Bagheera head off to the nearest man village for Mowgli to live. Yet, Bagheera wasn’t all to honest with Mowgli as the boy is unaware of the danger that he is in. When he does learn the truth, Mowgli runs off only to find a carefree bear by the name of Baloo. The two forge a friendship with Baloo promising to raise him. But, Bagheera shows up and informs Baloo of the danger Mowgli is in. After Mowgli is taken by orangutans and rescued, Baloo tells him that he must go to the man village by hurting his feelings. Upset at this news, Mowgli runs away from Baloo only to find himself in danger with the snake Kaa. Encountering Kaa earlier he knows his tricks, but falls into a deep sleep with Shere Khan nearby. At the same time, Bagheera and Baloo encounter elephants asking for their help. Unaware that Mowgli is close by and Shere Khan is eavesdropping, the hateful tiger learns of Mowgli’s whereabouts. Immediately, both parties set off to find the boy. In the meantime, Mowgli wakes up from his sleep when Shere Khan pulls Kaa out of a tree. Hearing the tiger is close by Mowgli leaves Kaa and finds four friendly vultures. Upon finding the four, Shere Khan appears scaring the four off. At the same time, Baloo appears and fights Shere Khan. The vultures and Bagheera appear, helping Mowgli by informing him that the tiger is scared of fire. At the same time, a thunderstorm brings lightning to strike a tree. By taking a falling tree branch that is on fire, he ties it to Shere Khan’s tail. The terrified tiger runs into the woods, it is implied that he dies in the fire. With Baloo and Bagheera by his side, Mowgli decides to stay in the man village. That is until he spots a young girl. Stunned by her beauty he leaves Bagheera and Baloo to go to the man village. The movie closes with Bagheera and Baloo heading off into the jungle together, while Mowgli starts a new life.

The Jungle Book would not have been the same if Bruce Reitherman did not portray Mowgli. On September 15, 1955, Bruce Reitherman was born making today his fifty-first birthday. As a child voice actor, Mowgli is one of the characters he brought to life.

West Side Story

Robert Wise is one of the most renowned directors of all time. He has won several awards for his work as a director and producer in different genres. However, West Side Story is his crowning achievement to me. In this classic Romeo and Juliet tale we are introduced to two lovers on different gangs in New York City.

Tony is a former member of the street gang called the Jets. When he is called upon by his best friend Riff to go to a dance he is reluctant yet, he agrees. On the other side of town, the leader of the Sharks their rivals, Bernardo is preparing his sister Maria and girlfriend Anita for the same dance. Maria is excited to go, but Bernardo is overprotective of his sister and worried that she will be targeted. At the dance the Jets and the Sharks face off, but as a rumble is about to start they have a dance off. During this time, Tony and Maria fall in love on the dance floor. Bernardo threatens Tony with Riff intervening insisting on them having a meeting afterwards for turf. When the dance ends, Riff and Bernardo meet up with their gangs where they agree to have a rumble. But, Tony goes after Maria where the two profess their love for each other. The following day as the rumble is about to happen, Tony is convinced by Maria to stop the fight as she doesn’t want anyone to get hurt. However, when Tony does his best things go horribly wrong with Bernardo accidentally killing Riff causing Tony in a fit of rage to kill Bernardo. Upset at what he has done, Tony goes to Maria to try and explain. Maria is informed of her brothers death by an angry Chico, who is in love with her. When Tony shows up she forgives Tony as she knows that this was an accident. In the meantime the Jets start to look for Tony when they hear that Chico is after him with a gun preparing to kill him. Unaware of this Tony heads off to Docs where he convinces him to help him leave town with Maria. When Maria hears of the news she sends down Anita to talk to Doc and give Tony the message. However, the Jets try to rape Anita causing her to tell them that Maria is dead by Chico’s hand. When Tony hears of this he angrily chases after Chico only to see Maria. As the two run towards each other Chico shoots and kills Tony. An angry Maria shouts at the gangs telling them that this is their fault. When Tony’s body is being carried away, the gangs make up as Maria walks silently with her head covered and down.

Robert Wise was able to bring the 1961 cinematic achievement West Side Story to life. On September 14, 2005, Robert Wise passed away with a legacy behind him. As movies like West Side Story would show he truly was one in a million.

Matilda

Matildaposter.jpgRaold Dahl was an author that was influential in my childhood. Many of his books have been read several times over and over again by children and adults all over the world. The first book by him that I enjoyed became a movie in 1996. Matilda is still a favorite movie of mine as a young girl with a brilliant mind and fantastic powers changes the lives of those around her.

From birth Matilda Wormwood has been misunderstood by her television addicted family. Each day, her dad goes to work as a crooked car salesman, her brother goes to school, and her mother goes out trying to win it big at BINGO. So, Matilda starts to take care of herself, each morning she makes herself breakfast and goes to the library. After reading all of the books there she manages to convince her father to let her go to school. But, her first day at school she discovers that the principal is a tyrant. Yet, she learns that her teacher, Ms. Honey, is kind and caring woman. While making those who make her life hard around her by punishing them using her powers, she discovers that Ms. Honey is the principals stepdaughter. After her father tragically died, she was told it was a suicide, but she believes that Trunchbull, the principal, was in on killing him. Trunchbull took everything from Ms. Honey by forging the will her father left her. Matilda knows that she has to take down the principal in order to make everything right again. But, she has to help her father out because the FBI is staking out her father’s car dealership because of his crooked ways. Not all is hope is lost, as Matilda uses her powers to take down the Trunchbull by scaring her using her powers to imitate the ghost of Ms. Honey’s father. With her gone, Matilda starts to spend her time with Ms. Honey. But, when her father is caught by the FBI her family is heading off to Guam. She manages to convince them to let her stay with Ms. Honey as she loves it where she is. They do so, and Matilda and Ms. Honey live happily ever after with the family they always wanted.

Matilda came to delight audiences in theaters in 1996. However, nothing compares to the original book that was written by Raold Dahl. On September 13, 1916, Raold Dahl was born. On this day he would have celebrated his 100th birthday, but he has passed on since. Even though he is gone his work lives on entertaining many people in the past, present, and future.

Subway Sadie

Subway Sadie lobby card 1926.jpgOn September 12, 1926 the silent film hit Subway Sadie came to theaters. This silent comedy was able to help pave the way for future comedy dramas. In this film there were many aspects that were able to come to life with the future of film

Salesgirl Sadie dreams of going to Paris one day and by chance she finds herself in luck. On her way home from work one day on the subway she meets Herb McCarthy, a subway guard. The two strike up a conversation and agree to meet on Sunday at Cleopatra’s Needle. After a short courtship, the two are engaged to be married. But, the wedding ends up being postponed when she goes from saleslady to firm buyer. She finds her dream of going to Paris in her midst, but knows that she has to leave Herb behind. However, she learn that Herb has been in an accident. Knowing that she cannot leave Herb behind she forgoes the job and visited him. When she meets up Herb in the hospital and agrees to marry him as soon as possible. It is then revealed that Herb’s father is the president of the subway company, thus allowing Sadie to discover her dreams of going to Paris anyway.

Subway Sadie is one of those films that has stood the test of time. On September 12, 1926 this film hit theaters to positive reviews. Subway Sadie is a film that was able to create a sense of drama in a comedy like no other film of the time could.

Happiness At The Door

On September 2, 2016 I visited the Garde Arts Center in New London, Connecticut to view the movie A Bigger Splash. Upon arrival I noticed how happy and cheerful the two women working in the box office were. They get along well while answering phones where there are questions about the movie that is being shown. While explaining the type of movie that is going to be screen, A Bigger Splash is a drama they prepare to open the doors as 6:30 approaches. The movie starts at 7:30, so they open the doors an hour ahead of time.

During my time visiting the box office I learned a thing about the family atmosphere that comes with the Garde Arts Center. “My mom used to work in the box office. She worked here for many years,” states Belle who has been working at the Garde for four years. Learning that her mom used to work in the box office at the made me realize how happy many of the patrons are as they are given their tickets.

Trish, the other woman working in the box office, has been working the box office for six years. But, she has been working there for twenty-one. “I can help you over here,” Trish calls welcoming another patron to the Garde Arts Center. “Most of the patrons are great,” Belle tells me. “True,” Trish agrees. But, working the box office doesn’t go without some mishaps. The two women have to help those who have misread the seating charts online, from there they are willing to help those get a seat where they would like.

But, even with those mishaps, the patrons are always smiling, even joking with Trish and Belle as they make their way in. As the patrons walk in, some with passes to see all of the seventeen films in the series, others are buying tickets at the door. Then there are some who are picking up the tickets they have already purchased online in the will call box. While Belle hands out a set of preordered tickets, Trish’s BOCA machine is printing out light blue tickets. Yet, there is one patron that will stick out. “Congratulations on winning!” Trish says with a smile, as the winner of contest with The Day comes to view the movie. I soon see that the people who Belle was helping out greet the young winner.

When the lights start to flicker I head through the lobby strewn by artwork by local artists. Inside the electric candles are dimmed as the show is about to start. As previews for Sing Street and the Man Who Knew Infinity play I can’t help but think of a quote that Belle told me. “It’s like a family atmosphere,” she told me. That is one thing that I can take away from my time in the box office.
