The Battle of the Somme

Somme-film-ad.jpgOn November 11, 1918 World War I ended. This brutal and bloody war plunged the modern day world into chaos. Among the horrific battles one of them is The Battle of the Somme. In 1916 there was footage that was compiled of the epic battle that had taken place.

Most of the footage shown in this movie is from old newsreels that were shown to the public. Many of the soldiers who are shown are from British battalions. Throughout the film they show their lives in the trenches as they struggle to keep their cool while fighting. They show the then modern weapons like cannons attached to tanks that had just taken the scene. The soldiers are shown silently receiving orders from their commanding officers about what their job is for the day and weeks to come. Although there was little battle footage to be shown this movie is able give insight to the terror of World War I.

World War I was a terrible war as it plunged the modern world into a bloody and chaotic war. In 1916 footage from The Battle of the Somme was filmed to show life on the front. The Battle of the Somme was made into a movie to show World War I through soldiers eyes. On November 11, 1918 World War I ended with an Armistice being declared.
