Judy Blume has brought to life several popular books for young adults. One of those books is Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. Following in the life of twelve year old Margaret Simon as she moves from New Jersey to New York as she goes through the stages of puberty. Growing up in an interfaith family, she never really had any religious affiliation, yet she prays to God as her body starts to change. At school she gains friends with whom she confides in as she anxiously awaits growing up. In the end, Margaret is able to find her standing with religion and becoming a woman.
Today is International Day of the Girl, hence the reason I chose this book. I read Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret as a preteen and was able to relate to her struggles as she grew up. Judy Blume was able to create a character that many young girls can relate to in Margaret Simon. I do feel many young girls can relate to Margaret as they start to enter puberty leading to womanhood.
