When Heartbreak Is Worth It: Katherine Paterson’s Newbery-winning Bridge to Terabithia

Katherine Paterson wrote one of the quintessential coming of age children’s books of all time. In Bridge to Terabithia we follow in a lonely boy named Jesse as he forms a friendship with Leslie. Jesse goes from a depressed and angry boy to a courageous and happy child. However, when tragedy strikes causing Leslie to die, Jesse is left alone. Having to deal with grief, shock, and guilt over her sudden death Jesse struggles to find the strength to carry on. Yet, he is able to find it in his family and those closest to him from the beginning.
