Read It Wednesday: Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story

Last night Hanukkah, the celebration of lights, started. All over the world the Jewish people brought out their menorahs and lit the first candle of the eight nights. For this Read-It Wednesday, I chose a children’s book called Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story by Fran Manushkin.

In this short, yet touching tale, we follow a family who is struggling following a bad harvest. When they come across a stray dog and stray cat they start to find the potatoes and apples they need to make latkes and applesauce for Hanukkah. The family is able to make their own “miracle” for Hanukkah with the gifts they have received.
