“Where do people go when they runaway?” is the opening line to Elizabeth Swado’s musical Runaways. In this musical we follow various people who live on the street. Through children who are from broken homes, abused, or living in an orphanage telling their story as to why they ran away. The life they are forced to live is tough as they struggle to find a decent job with a minimum education. Their stories are touching, moving, and sad as they tell you why their life is better on the street than it was at “home.” Stuck in a vicious cycle, some of the children end up going from victim to perpetrator with future runaway kids. In the end, all these children want is to be a kid again and society to welcome them back.
