#114 Caroline Abbott

Another American Girl blog post, but I hope you enjoy it. Caroline Abbott was introduced later than the rest of her dolls, but that does not make her story less inspiring. Growing up during the War of 1812, Caroline is the daughter of a sailor and a typical housewife. Caroline dreams of being a sailor like her father one day and enjoys fishing. However, when her father ends up becoming captured, Caroline must put her courage to the test leading many of her friends to call her a hero. Caroline’s story is one that is truly unique for what she is able to accomplish for young girl her age in a time of war.

Faith Friday: Repent and Believe in the Gospel

And saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.- Mark 1:15

Mark 1:15

In the book of Mark in the bible the phrase “Repent and believe in the Gospel” has a special meaning. For who are we to question God and those around us. We can spread the word of God and his son Jesus to others in hopes that they hear. But, does that help us repent our sins. In order to repent you must be able to confess your sin. The old saying confession is good for the soul is true. The reason this is because when you truly repent your sins to those around you God and Jesus hear you and forgive you. I know it can be scary to admit your sin to others and ask for forgiveness. However, sin can creep up on you. A guilty conscious can make you feel sad and depressed. When you ask God and Jesus for forgiveness, whether it be in prayer or in confession to a priest, he truly does hear them. God and Jesus watch over us all the time and want us to make the right decision. Confessing your sins and asking for forgiveness is one of those ways.

#115 Samantha Parkington

My girl power posts have taken a bit of an American Girl turn. Samantha Parkington is a young girl being raised in a privileged life in 1904. She is an orphan and her grandmother has taken her in. One day Samantha meets Nellie, a girl her age, she assumes Nellie will be able to go to school with her. Unfortunately, back in those days social class has a lot to do with whether or not you got an education. Samantha learns through Nellie about the treacherous thing that is child labor. With the support of her Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia, Samantha becomes a child activist spreading the truth about what happens in factories to children and what needs to be done in order to help children get the education they need. Samantha has a mind of her own and is not afraid to use her brain when it comes down to helping others.

Writing 201: Future

A Sonnet of the Future

Looking out the window wondering what is there

Wondering what it is going to be is more like it

What will life bring me?

Will I be able to handle what comes my way?

What will I get?

Will I be rich? Will I be famous?

Or will I be poor and needy?

What the future brings, I don’t know

I hope to find out soon

So I can be calm.

#116 Kit Kittredge

Every young girl growing up has dreams of their own. Many want to see them happen at that very moment. Kit Kittredge does just that in her American Girl story. When we are introduced to Kit, a young girl growing up during the Great Depression, we discover that she wants to become a reporter. However, there are set backs throughout her childhood that prevent her from doing so. Her dad looses his job, which leads to her parents taking in boarders to live in their house. So, Kit ends up having to take on more duties than she would have to. But, she never gives up on her dream of becoming a reporter. Kit always finds something to write about, she looks around her and finds inspiration right in her own backyard. Kit knows that it is a long way to go before she can become a real reporter, but she starts young and never stops going for her goals.

Writing 201: Landscape

Looking Down

I walk up the steps

To the next level

I look down at

The city below

Paris! The city of lights

I see cars moving

At the speed of light

The seine has a small boat

Floating by

I love the view of Paris from here

It is something I will remember so dear

#117 Misty (Pokemon)

A young girl has a dream and lives to see it happen. In the hit anime series Pokemon we see Misty do just that. She dreams of becoming a great trainer of water pokemon. Throughout the series she has her ups and her downs when she faces Team Rocket or witnesses her pokemon struggle. Misty goes through it all and in the end lives to become what she always dreamed of. We also, learn about Misty’s family life and how they sometimes lead her to stray from her work. However, her family trusts and believe that Misty can accomplish anything. In the series, Misty is a ten year old girl who goes on an adventure. Now this is a cartoon where ten year old’s can go and do this. But, Misty does stand up to the challenge at all times. Misty is a wonderful example of how a girl can follow her dreams and accomplish them.

#118 (Sister) Sarah Brown (Guys and Dolls)

Sarah Brown....Guys and Dolls!

In the hit musical Guys and Dolls, Sister Sarah Brown stands up for what she believes in without losing her way. Sarah is in charge of a Save-A-Soul Mission type organization with high morals. However, the bad boy in her life can bring out the worst in her. In Guys and Dolls, gambling is frequent and Sarah ends up being roped into it. Her kind and very sheltered life does allow her to see the good in the world around her. She wants to help those who are lost and wants to bring them to the light, so to say. Sister Sarah Brown is a marvelous example of how a beautiful and classy woman can be herself in world where men want women to change who they are for their liking.
